DO’s & DON’Ts of Using your New Generator

Congratulations on purchasing your new portable generator. You need  to plan and organize  beforehand to avoid accidents or mishaps. The first thing to do is to keep the Owner’s Manual nearby. Read thoroughly and understand it as much as possible before handling your generator for the first time. Below are some tips to consider.

DO's

- Do size up how much power the generator can provide. You must be aware of the correct starting and running watts of the generator so you can fully maximise its usage.

- Find a dry and safe location to set up your generator. Make sure it is well-ventilated. Remember that  a 1.5-meter minimum distance from anything else is highly recommended.

- Do consult a licensed electrician should you decide to run leads into your house to power your home electronic items.

- Do a general check each time the generator is used, e.g. fuel, oil, etc.

- Use only fresh fuel and empty the fuel tank regularly, never leaving it stagnant.

- Do let the generator cool down before refuelling it. This may take 30 to 45 minutes.

- Check that the main circuit breaker is off to avoid accidental loading while switching it on.

- Always follow the manufacturer's guide and know your local regulations.

DON’Ts

- Don't store any fuel near the generator, it's a fire hazard and may cause a potential explosion.

- Don't ever run your generator inside your home or any indoor setting. The generator releases carbon monoxide which is a health hazard if exposed.

- Don't restart immediately if the generator won’t start. Let it rest for at least 30 seconds before trying again.
